What is a backsplash?

Backsplashes today have become the focal point of many kitchens and is a major design feature. This has not always been the case. Backsplashes were originally designed just to protect the wall behind the stove and sink from splash back. They needed to be an easy to clean surface and to protect the wall. Today they usually go under the upper cabinets above the counter. Some are still easy to clean, but not all are. Today beauty and design elements are a priority.

Backsplash Material Options

Today there are many options for a back splash. They can be made from metal, glass, porcelain, ceramic and many more options.

Stainless steel has always been popular in kitchen backsplashes. Today it is still a great option, but in a variety of styles such as Plain Stainless Steel Panel, stainless steel backsplash tiles, and  peel and stick backsplash tiles.

Occasionally you can see other materials used in a backsplash, but what I have shown here are the materials that I think will look beautiful and hold up the best over time.

As you can see, backsplashes have come a long way from when the first started being used. They have become beautiful design elements that can become a focus of interest in the kitchens of many homes. There is a great deal of variety in what can be used.

  1. LOVE the site!!! My kitchen is in such need of a make over!! You have no idea! Think 70’s wood paneling, with 30+ years of nicotine stacked on top of it! I know yuck right?! Excellent information!! Have always loved the BIG tiles! Great work! 🙂
